To qualify for this list, a franchise must have seen regular releases for at least twenty years, from a franchise's first title to its most recent release. In order for a game to qualify as part of the franchise, it must either: 1) state the name of the franchise in the title; or 2) make it possible that at least one of the playable characters in the very first game of the franchise also be a playable character in the latest or upcoming release; if the character is featured in a fighting game or a role-playing video game, he/she must at least serve as an assist character, that is, he/she may be called upon by the player, actively influencing gameplay.
